I was recently rummaging through in a box of old projects when I came across this logo I designed for the Evangelism Department of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma in 1979. It was for their annual Youth Evangelism Conference and is possibly the first project I ever did for the convention.
Back before computers and vector graphics, custom lettering had to be done by hand with pencils, erasers, templates, straightedges, French curves and technical pens. Spot color was achieved by using an X-Acto knife to cut overlays out of Amberlith for each individual color. All of which had to be registered by hand.
In some ways, I truly miss those days. You had to be a craftsman and a draftsman as well as a designer. There was something intrinsically satisfying about using your hands for more than pounding a keyboard and pushing a mouse or stylus around.
